CHAPTER ELEVEN
Dragons can live for hundreds of years.
Naomi didnât have to really lie to her parents. She told them that Tavik and she had split. When they asked why, she said heâd fallen in love with another woman. Again, none of it was lie. Her fatherâs face had grown very dark, and he began muttering that heâd still like to meet Tavik. Five minutes alone in a room with him was all he needed. Naomiâs mother couldnât stop hugging her and stroking her hair.
Sheâd told them that sheâd tried to enter the house quietly so as not to wake them but got turned around in the dark. She asked if she could stay with them. They said of course. She had to break down and say that she didnât have anything but the clothes on her back. She kept the cloak closed so they wouldnât see how little she was wearing. She felt so ashamed. Her mother told her not to worry about it. They would go to Wal-Mart the next day and pick up everything she needed.
Sheâd gone up to her childhood bedroom and lay down. She stared up at the ceiling with its glow-in-the-dark stars and let the tears slide. She hugged the alicorn to herself and wondered what there was for her to do now. As she slept, she dreamed of strong arms circling her.
The next morning, she showered and dressed in some clothes borrowed from her mother. Sheâd figured out that it had been only a day since sheâd left. Her previous oddness was understandable to them now. Her parents thought sheâd been putting on a brave front. Bobby had explained that sheâd insisted on staying with him because she hadnât had anywhere else to go. They didnât know where sheâd been all day and had gotten worried. Sheâd again told the truth that sheâd been trying to talk to Tavik and convince him that they could work it out. And of course, they hadnât worked it out.
Sheâd gone to Wal-Mart with her mother and picked up new clothes. Being in the big box store had been surreal. The florescent lights had given her a headache, and the feel of the synthetic fabrics had felt so strange to her. Theyâd gone grocery shopping as well. The produce section had really thrown her. Sheâd gotten used to market day at the castle. Sheâd often gone with Yula and helped her friend make the purchases. She wondered what her friend would have said if she could see the huge swath of vegetables and fruits from all over the world. More produce there than on five market days. Her friend probably wouldâve fainted.
But her friend would never see it, and she would never see her again. When the alicorn had broken from Snowflake, the spell had been cast. No one on Terratu knew her anymore.
They went back to the house, and Naomi helped her mother bring everything inside. They found Bobby waiting for them.
âSis! Are you all right?â
She set the bags of groceries on the counter and nodded.
